The US Secretary of State during the Presidencies of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford visited Chinese President Xi Jinping on July 19, 2023.
«We will never forget our old friends, nor their historic contributions to the development of US-China relations and the friendship between the two peoples,» Jinping said.
«Kissinger is a “friend of China” and that “neither the US nor China can afford to treat each other as adversaries” and that their relationship would be “central to world peace and the progress of our society» Chinese spokesmen said.
Kissinger emphasized that he was there “of his own free will” and not acting on behalf of the US government. This important courtesy visit, without being official, contributes to improving relations between the two important powers.
